Why did the chicken cross the road? To visit the internet café

I spend a nominal proportion of my day on Twitter – clearly not as much as Paris Hilton, but enough to have a few intelligent conversations with other social media professionals.

They are exactly the kind of early adopters you would expect to be fully immersed in the Twittersphere – but in my experience, are not the most active.

I also manage an account to promote my poultry blog and a number of others on behalf of paying clients. What surprises me most is the number of conversations Twitter users want to have with chickens. All my poultry posts are widely retweeted and my @replies are up to around 15 per day – compared to a meagre five on my personal account.

This week we were told that no one actually uses Twitter. Five per cent of Twitter users account for the majority of the activity and most users have less than 10 followers.

You may think five percent is still a worthy number – that’s still an audience of over two million – but how sophisticated can this audience be when all they want to share is ‘Why did the chicken cross the road?’ jokes?
